District 2-T3 – El Paso Five Points Lions Club Vision Screening – August 29
On August 29, the El Paso Five Points Lions Club conducted free vision screening to the public at the 30th Anniversary BEK Medical Inc celebration in El Paso, Texas, supported by BEK Medical owner Dora Williams. District 2-T3 has a large geographical area to cover, aiming to bring unity and support to all communities within the district’s footprint. A District Vision Mission was envisioned by District Governor, Dr. Aaron Urias, with a West Vision Chairperson and an East Vision Chairperson. When BEK offered Yvette Carrera, who is a member of the Five Points Lions Club and is also the District 2-T3 West Vision Chairperson, Lion Yvette went into action to set her club up for the event. This would give the club the opportunity to provide vision screening alongside other community health education providers. The focus of the Lion’s child vision screening program is on early detection of vision problems and increasing access to care for those who may otherwise go without it. The day proved to be a great example of how Lions can collaborate with other organizations to build healthy futures, raise awareness, and demonstrate what service looks like when communities come together.
The first point of significance was accessibility. By removing financial barriers, the Lions Club ensured that no one had to choose between cost and care.
The second point was early detection. Catching these conditions early can prevent long-term complications and allow corrective action, such as prescription glasses, to make an immediate difference.
The third point was community engagement. The event fostered stronger ties within the community by encouraging conversations about health in a welcoming, supportive setting.
The fourth point was collaboration. This spirit of partnership not only maximized the reach of the event but also reinforced the Lions’ role as a unifying force in community service.
The fifth and final point was impact. By dedicating a single day to vision health, the Five Points Lions Club improved lives and set an example of how service organizations can address real needs in tangible ways.
The August 29 vision screening was more than a health initiative—it was a demonstration of the Lions Club’s commitment to accessibility, prevention, education, collaboration, and measurable impact. Events like this remind us that service is not abstract; it is personal, practical, and powerful. The Five Points Lions Club’s work continues to prove that when a community prioritizes vision, it gives its members the chance to see—and seize—their future more clearly.
With the support of our District 2-T3 Governor, Dr. Aaron Urias, we will reach out to our local community organizations and unite with other Lions clubs to provide community vision screenings and access to resources needed to support our Vision Mission.
