District 2-S4 – Brazoria County South Onyx Teams Up With UTMB
Heart Screenings on Aug. 9 Catch Silent Risks, Give Local Families Peace of Mind
Free community event identifies potential cardiac issues and connects students with follow-up care
BRAZORIA COUNTY, Texas — [Aug. 29, 2025] — More than 450 student athletes and spirit program members turned out on August 9 at Clute Intermediate School and on August 10 in Spring, Texas for free heart screenings that aimed to detect hidden cardiac conditions before the fall sports season.
The Clute event, hosted by MyCHN / Community Health Network, in partnership with the Cody Stephens Foundation, Brazosport ISD, and the Brazoria County Onyx Lions Club was held at Clute Intermediate School and drew families from across Southern Brazoria County.
Organizers reported that across both events nine student-participants were flagged for follow-up evaluations. All families received results along with guidance for next steps.
“Screenings like these save lives,” said Sharon Barnes, Chief HR Officer at MyCHN. Most young people feel healthy, but certain heart conditions show few or no symptoms until it’s too late. Catching risks early lets kids play and participate safer and lets parents sleep easier. This is our second screening event; and we are so grateful to our sponsors and for the parents who had their children screened.”
The comprehensive assessment included a cardiac risk questionnaire, blood pressure check, and electrocardiogram (ECG). Participants who received referrals were connected to providers to ensure timely follow-up. Families also received education on warning signs, such as fainting during exercise, chest pain, or a family history of sudden cardiac death, and how to respond.
The mission of the Cody Stephens Foundation is simple: no family should lose a child to an undetected heart condition. Cody’s life was lost, which could have been prevented with such screenings. These evaluations made possible by community partners and volunteers, help identify issues early and keep our students safe.
Local leaders praised the turnout and collaboration among schools, healthcare providers, and civic organizations.
“This is community health at its best,” said Barnes, BCS Onyx Lions Club President. “Parents, coaches, and clinicians came together to protect kids and support their dreams.”
For students who missed the Aug. 9 event, Onyx Lions Club members will sponsor another screening in 2026.
