DISTRICT 2-A1: MIDLAND DOWNTOWN LIONS CLUB’S CREATIVE APPROACH TO SERVING THE HOMELESS
FROM EYEGLASS CASES TO FIRST-AID KITS: MIDLAND DOWNTOWN LIONS CLUB’S CREATIVE APPROACH TO SERVING THE HOMELESS
Turning Discarded Items into Dignity
In a creative twist on resourcefulness and compassion, the Midland Downtown Lions Club has demonstrated an innovative way to serve its community’s most vulnerable population, people experiencing homelessness, by transforming donated eyeglass cases into portable first-aid kits. What began as a simple question—“What can we do with all these empty eyeglass cases?”—has blossomed into a meaningful service project that addresses a critical need while embodying the Lions motto, “We Serve.” The Project in Action The concept is simple yet impactful. Midland Downtown Lions Club members, who spend hours sorting glasses at the Texas Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center (TLERC), were initially discarding eyeglass cases that TLERC had no need for; that is, until club president Sabrina Wegner came up with the idea of using plastic eyeglass cases as first-aid kits.
The project begins with thoroughly cleaning and sanitizing the case; the kits are assembled with essential toiletries and personal care items:
- Cotton balls
- Q-tips
- Bandages/Band-Aids
- Gauze
- Antibiotic ointment
- Alcohol wipes
- Lip balm
- Bandage wrap roll
- Eyeglass cleaning cloth
- Hair ties
- Pair of scissors
- Pair of tweezers
The compact size of the eyeglass case makes these kits perfect for homeless individuals, who often have limited carrying capacity and need portable, accessible hygiene solutions. And, yes, ALL of the listed items fit in one eyeglass case!
Why This Service Project Matters
Homelessness is a complex issue affecting thousands in communities across the Nation. Although Lions Clubs traditionally focus on vision care and sight-related services, this project recognizes that dignity and basic first aid are interconnected with overall health and well-being.
Community Impact
Midland businesses donate eyeglass cases, the Midland Downtown Lions Foundation donated startup funds, a local hotel donated cotton balls and Q-tips, and club members assembled 55 kits in the first stage of the project. Kits were delivered to three places: the local YMCA, which plans to share them with a local food bank; a local church that runs a food pantry once a month; and a club member’s sister, who is sending the kits to service members in the military.
A Model for Other Clubs
What makes this project particularly inspiring is its scalability and adaptability. Other Lions clubs have adopted similar initiatives, modifying the concept to fit their communities’ needs. Some clubs partner with local dental offices for toothbrushes and toothpaste and others with beauty supply stores for additional items. These kits are for anyone in the community who has a need. The Lions Difference This eyeglass case first-aid kit project exemplifies how Lions clubs think creatively about service. By repurposing discarded materials and addressing an overlooked need, Lions demonstrate that meaningful service doesn’t always require large budgets—it requires compassion, creativity, and commitment. As homelessness continues to challenge communities nationwide, initiatives like this remind us that small acts of service, multiplied across many hands and hearts, create significant change.
Where there’s a need, there’s a Lion.
