District 2-T3 – A Purse of Her Own
A Purse of Her Own: Restoring Dignity, One Handbag at a Time
In our bustling lives, it’s easy to overlook the quiet struggles faced by many in our own community. For women experiencing homelessness, financial hardship, or simply navigating a tough patch, even the most basic necessities can be out of reach. That’s where the El Paso Centennial Lions Club steps in, extending a hand of compassion through their heartwarming initiative: “A Purse of Her Own.”
More than just a collection drive, “A Purse of Her Own” is a profound gesture of empathy designed to restore dignity and provide practical support to women in need throughout El Paso. Each year, the dedicated members of the Lions Club gather gently used purses, transforming them into beacons of hope filled with essential items that many of us take for granted. Imagine the comfort of having your own toothbrush, a bar of soap, shampoo, feminine hygiene products, or even a small tube of lotion – items that contribute not just to physical well-being, but to a sense of self-worth and normalcy.
The concept is beautifully simple yet incredibly impactful. A purse, for many women, is a personal sanctuary, a holder of daily essentials, and often an extension of identity. For a woman living on the streets or in temporary shelters, a purse of her own, filled with necessities, can be a small but significant source of comfort and empowerment. It’s a discreet way to carry personal items, a reminder that someone cares, and a tangible piece of dignity in circumstances that often strip it away.
“We believe every woman deserves to feel valued and have access to basic hygiene,” says Centennial Club Lion Ruth Rivas, the service project originator. “’A Purse of Her Own’ allows us to provide not just practical items, but also a message of love and compassion. It tells these women that they are seen, they are remembered, and they matter.”
The project relies entirely on the generosity of the community. Residents are encouraged to donate gently used purses – those stylish bags sitting in the back of your closet, still in good condition, waiting for a new purpose. But the need goes beyond just the bags themselves. The true magic happens when these purses are thoughtfully stuffed with new, unopened toiletries and hygiene products. Think travel-sized shampoos, conditioners, soaps, toothbrushes, toothpaste, hand sanitizers, body lotions, combs, brushes, and especially feminine hygiene products, which are often among the most requested and least accessible items. Small, comforting extras like lip balm, a compact mirror, or even a handwritten note of encouragement can make an immense difference.
The El Paso Centennial Lions Club meticulously collects, sorts, and fills these purses before distributing them to local shelters, outreach programs, and directly to women identified as needing a helping hand. The impact is immediate and deeply personal.
