District 2-E2 – Godley Lions Club Brings Community Together with “When We Love Sandwiches” Project
Godley Lions Club Assists The “WHEN WE LOVE” Charity
The Godley Lions Club in District 2-E2 has long been known for its dedication to service, fellowship, and meeting community needs with creativity and compassion. One of their favorite assistance programs is working with the Kowboy Krewe Foundation, Godley Methodist Church, the Godley Women of Faith Organization, and the VFW Auxiliary Post 6872 in providing sandwiches for the WHEN WE LOVE Charity in Fort Worth. This service project has become a signature example of how small acts of kindness can make a big difference when efforts are shared with organizations. By combining the simple joy of sharing food with other organizations dedicated to helping others, the Godley Lions Club shines!
A Simple Idea with a Big Impact
The concept is straightforward: prepare and share freshly made sandwiches with those in need and seeking assistance with the WHEN WE LOVE Charity fighting homelessness. What began as a modest effort (400 sandwiches one week a month, 3-½ years ago) has grown into a monthly project of 1,200 sandwiches, three weeks out of each month. They are currently searching for a group to help with the fourth week of each month.
Club members gather at the kitchen in the Godley Methodist Church or the VFW Auxiliary Post 6872 in Crowley Texas, setting up assembly lines to prepare, bag (with a packet of mustard and mayonnaise), and label each bagged sandwich. The packages are then delivered to the When We Love Charity in Fort Worth, Texas.
More Than Just Food
While sandwiches may be the centerpiece, the heart of the project is about connection. For many recipients, receiving a meal is also receiving the message that they are cared for and valued. Volunteers frequently hear stories of gratitude, where a simple lunch eased a day of hardship or reminded someone that they are not forgotten. WHEN WE LOVE provides hope to those in need by getting training, a job and a place to live, and escape homelessness. For the Godley Lions Club, the experience fosters deeper relationships within the club and strengthens their shared commitment to the Lions’ motto: “We Serve.”
